Wild Mustang Adoption

Did you know that over 79,000 wild Mustangs currently live in Bureau of Land Management (BLM) managed lands? While close to 7,000 horses found homes last year, many horses still search for their forever homes. If you are exploring the possibility of wild Mustang adoption, consider adopting a Mustang through the Wild Rose Mustang Advocacy Group. With goals of adopting 100 to 200 horses every year, we aim to make a difference in these horses’ lives and yours by pairing horses with the best adopter. Keep reading to learn more about getting started with the adoption process.

How to Get Started with Wild Mustang Adoption

Read our adoption policy

If you are interested in adopting one of our Mustangs, the best place to start is by looking over our adoption policy. To ensure that our wild Mustangs go to the best home, we have laid out what is required to provide our horses with the best possible outcome for their adoption. Below are a few of the key requirements stated in our adoption policy. Feel free to download and read the full policy on our website for the complete requirements.

Key takeaways from our adoption policy:

  • Prospective adopters must submit a signed adoption application that includes references
  • Potential adopters must be at least 18 years old and be able to support an equine financially
  • A non-refundable deposit of $300 is required for a horse to be put into pending adoption status

Apply for the adoption application

Once you’ve had the chance to look at our adoption policy, the next step in the adoption process starts with completing our adoption application. The adoption application is three pages long and asks questions surrounding your experience with horses, where you will anticipate boarding your Mustang, and requires two references that can vouch for you. While not everyone is guaranteed approval, completed applications are valid for six months after they are received. Applications must be sent to wildrosemagic@gmail.com or can be submitted by mail to our address in Fort Collins.

Wild Mustang adoption is an extremely rewarding experience, so if you are looking for the right organization to partner with for your adoption, consider filling out an application on our website. Ready to get started with the adoption process? We’d love to speak with you. Send us your name, email address, and message on our “contact us” page and we will get back to you shortly or give us a call at (970) 232-5917. We look forward to helping you make wild Mustang adoption a reality.

While you wait on your application to be processed, check out this testimonial from Olivia and Leda.

Olivia and Leda

“I do not think I am capable of fully articulating how completely enamored I am with my mustang.  I bought her in October 2017 when she had been under saddle for only a few months, and by the following summer, we were competing in recognized events. As someone who has only been in the horse world for less than four years, I was somewhat daunted by my decision to buy a green, formally-feral horse. However, being a creature selectively bred by nature to thrive under harsh circumstances, Leda quickly proved herself to be smart, determined, and sure-footed; traits which made our journey together much smoother than I had imagined. The mustang horses are a truly special bunch, and the bonds you can form with them are like none other.”
